Tiled Planters for Helm Cockle Bay

When it comes to custom commercial furniture design, the best solutions aren't always built from a blank sheet of paper. Sometimes the smartest custom planter is one that starts with a proven design and flexes to fit the brief. That's exactly what happened when we worked with the design team behind Helm Cockle Bay, one of Sydney's landmark harbourside venues, to create a run of terracotta-tiled planters for the entrance to their newly refurbished outdoor dining space.

The Brief: A Fully Tiled, Mediterranean-Inspired Entrance

As part of Helm Cockle Bay's refurbishment, the designers wanted a striking, tactile material palette to greet guests as they arrived along the Darling Harbour waterfront. Ceramic tile was central to that vision — the kind of fully clad, custom planter box you'd typically only get from a ground-up joinery build.

A planter built completely from scratch can absolutely achieve that look, but it comes with longer lead times and a higher price tag, since every part of the structure — frame, waterproofing, drainage, cladding system — has to be engineered and built new for that one project. With a firm installation deadline and a live hospitality venue to fit around, the project needed a faster, more flexible path to the same result.

Flexible By Design: Adapting Our ALLO Planters

This is where the flexibility of our ALLO planter range made all the difference. ALLO is built around a robust, tested aluminium frame designed from day one to accept different cladding finishes — normally timber battens or a clean powder-coated aluminium face. That adaptable design meant our team didn't need to reinvent the planter itself; we just needed to reimagine what it could wear on the outside.

 

Our design team worked directly with the tiles the designers had already selected — a warm terracotta tile with a caramel grout — and re-engineered the ALLO cladding system to mount them cleanly across the vertical face. We paired the tiled fronts with an ALLO body finished in our Terrain Red powdercoat, chosen specifically to sit in harmony with the terracotta and grout tones rather than compete with them.

Getting there wasn't just a matter of gluing tiles to a frame. A few specific problems needed solving along the way:

• Incorporating a vertical tiled face into the ALLO cladding system — engineering a mounting method that would hold tile securely on a planter that needs to handle outdoor conditions, movement, and day-to-day knocks in a busy venue.
• Adjusting the ALLO dimensions to suit the tile module — rather than cutting tiles to fit a fixed planter size, we sized each planter to the tile pattern itself, so the grid runs clean and unbroken across every face with no awkward slivers of cut tile.
• Levelling for a large, semi-public outdoor area — these planters needed to sit dead straight along a waterfront apron that isn't perfectly flat. We fitted heavy-duty adjustable feet to every planter so the team on-site could level each one individually to compensate for uneven ground and the natural camber of the space.

Because the underlying ALLO platform was already proven, our team could move quickly through design, sampling, and production — turning a custom-look, fully tiled planter around in a fraction of the time a ground-up build would take, and at a more cost-effective price point for the client.

Delivered Fully Assembled, Ready to Place

Every planter arrived at Helm Cockle Bay fully assembled — tiled, finished, and ready to go. There was no on-site assembly, tiling, or finishing work required; the installation team simply positioned each planter in place along the entrance and levelled it on its adjustable feet.

For a live hospitality venue, that matters. Minimal on-site work means minimal disruption, a faster fit-out, and one less thing to coordinate around trade schedules and opening hours.

The Result: A Tiled Perimeter Along the Waterfront

The finished planters now line the entrance to Helm Cockle Bay, forming a perimeter around the outdoor dining space right on the water's edge. They deliver the fully tiled, designer-specified look the space called for — with the durability, drainage, and structural integrity of our standard ALLO planter platform underneath.
